Hip-Hop Detoxx, while at its core provides services for teens and young adults. Our solutions consider the social, emotional, healthy development of urban youth and the need for interplay between the community. We believe if the community is collaborative, the healthy development of urban youth is cultivated.

We found that our approach is reflective of Illinois Social-Emotional Learning Standards and the seven principles for changing at-risk behavior as presented by Dr. Carl C. Bell, current professor of psychiatry and public health at the University of Illinois-Chicago -- who also endorsed and actively consulted the healthy lifestyle and implementation processes of Hip Hop Detoxx.

When working with low income urban youth we also:

1) understand, recognize, and appreciate the differences of Black children in America,

2) be aware of the life circumstances of children and youth who are being served,

3) provide multicultural experiences for Black youth, and

4) provide opportunities for youth to interact with positive African American adults.

Our approach deciphers media and pop culture to teach youth critical thinking skills so that they may be informed of their cultural heritage and need for positive social development. This approach also helps cancel the negative imagery fed to youth at home through forms of media and in public spaces.

The strength and influence of the pop culture on youth in today's society is undeniable. Yet, the ideas presented through our organization's activities awaken the skills, gifts, talents and virtues that lay dormant in youth and much of society today.
